We Need Tranquillity A
Sue O'Donnell

A moment of tranquillity
And what did I see?
I noticed a bumble bee
Hanging easily on a bluebell.
Not a care in the world, presumably,
For certainly the bee is not busy.
‘So why should I be?’ I thought.
‘Why be caught in an endless
Tiring web of activity?
If the ever industrious bee
Can stop, be still, relax,
Then why can’t we?
What drives us relentlessly into busyness,
And all the incumbent stress?’
I decided then at least for the moment
To stop, to seek tranquillity.
What did I notice?

WE NEED TRANQUILLITY

A moment of tranquillity
And what did I see?
I noticed a bumble bee
Hanging easily on a bluebell.
Not a care in the world, presumably,
For certainly the bee is not busy.
‘So why should I be?’ I thought.
‘Why be caught in an endless
Tiring web of activity?
If the ever industrious bee
Can stop, be still, relax,
Then why can’t we?
What drives us relentlessly into busyness,
And all the incumbent stress?’
I decided then at least for the moment
To stop, to seek tranquillity.
What did I notice?
The evening was completely calm,
Nothing whatsoever stirring.
All I could hear was the bird’s beautiful singing,
As if in unity with the calm of evening.
A taste of the balm of Your presence, Lord,
What a lot this certain silence did teach me!
Thank You for the glimpse of the bumble bee.

Lord, I am so grateful for the unexpected glimpse of the bumble bee. I knew I was being over busy, yet did nothing
about it. Then this moment drawn into Your presence made the difference. Thank You for the still silence of the
evening. The calm, the quiet, the stillness was relaxing causing me to focus on You.
Help me please, to remember the lesson regarding being still that I may really look and listen. Today already whilst
quietly before You, I notice that the clematis has scrambled all the way high up into the holly tree. What a
surprise!
Lord, I think You long to surprise us, but this requires us to focus on You and not us, not our ideas and
preoccupations. Thank You for every silent moment in Your presence making it easier to receive from You. We need
tranquillity! How very good it is for us when we achieve this. Amen.
