January Garden
Sue O'Donnell

January garden, almost devoid of flowers,
Our hope is in you to become productive.
Currently resting, welcoming the die down,
Soon you will herald first signs of new life.
Helleborus, snowdrop, crocus, will satisfy us,
For we see after resting comes further flowering.
Faith is something like this as long as we are praying.
Striving, resting, praying more, labouring on,
The battle is won by even balancing.
Glancing towards God in the busyness,
Listening attentively in the stillness of rest.

January garden, almost devoid of flowers,
Our hope is in you to become productive.
Currently resting, welcoming the die down,
Soon you will herald first signs of new life.
Helleborus, snowdrop, crocus, will satisfy us,
For we see after resting comes further flowering.
Faith is something like this as long as we are praying.
Striving, resting, praying more, labouring on,
The battle is won by even balancing.
Glancing towards God in the busyness,
Listening attentively in the stillness of rest.
This is how when stopping,
Just like the January garden enjoying breathing space,
We can fulfil our life according to God’s will.
God calls us not always to be doing
But to enjoy remaining in His presence contentedly.
Seasons are sent for good reason.
Winter is the time of resting.

Lord, today it is snowing, blanketing the January garden in a white covering. It is as if You are saying ‘Be still.
Remain awhile under My influence. Life has a greater purpose than continued busyness.’ May we learn to reach
out to You in the quietness, in the stillness. Thank You for reaching out for us. May we not lose any opportunity
to be aware of Your presence, for it is so very good to enjoy Your company. Amen.
