Cheeky, Cheery Robin
Sue O'Donnell

Cheeky, cheeky cheery robin
Always hoppin’ and bobbin’ about.
Lively, lively, busy robin.
Not backward nor timid, but forward, inquisitive.
Red breasted, above whiter chested,
They are called ‘the gardeners’ friend’.
Enjoying our digging they practice hunting nearby,
Ever looking out for ground disturbed, worms a-wriggling.
Always territorial, robins defend their own soil,
Be this parkland, hedgerows, garden or woodland.
Resilient throughout the year in England, they regularly appear, draw near,

Resilient throughout the year in England, they regularly appear, draw near,
Scarlet coated, when leaves fall from display
And many other species fly away, robins are noticeable.
Here in their dominance, splendid in appearance,
When adult whether male or female, both boast the red coat, eye-catchingly,
Whilst the juveniles have no red breast as yet.
Small, neat in stature, robins are a wonder of nature.
Iconic, doughty in proclaiming tuneful territory.
Singing in short phrases yet high notes, each different from before,
The robin repertoire is melodious, rippling, charming.
Perky, perky, friendly robin,
Rare as a pair, most unusual to be seen together,
But then of course, nothing indeed is impossible to God,
And at this time of year the symbolic robin draws near
To remind us of such happiness Christmas will bring us.

Lord, the scarlet breasted robin is an iconic symbol of Christmas being bright and cheerful. Thank You for this
tiny bird so charming to many. Amen.
