“…His own blood having won an eternal redemption for us.” Hebrews 9 v 12
“…His own blood having won an eternal redemption for us.” Hebrews 9 v 12
Your most precious body and blood is for us, Lord,
absolutely essential to give life and sanctity.
Your most precious body the spiritual nourishment
to feed us, build us up into Your body on earth.
Your most precious blood poured out on the †
as a libation, an offering cleansing us from sin.
“He took some bread, and when He had said the blessing
Mark 14 v 22 He broke it and gave it to them.”
Most blessed and holy night, a commemoration
Now and ever to be our celebration, a re-enactment
making You actually present amongst us.
“O thou our reminder of Christ crucified,
living Bread, the life of us for whom He died,
lend this life to me then; feed and feast my mind,
love be thou the sweetness man was meant to find.”
Fifth verse of a hymn entitled “Adoro te devote”,
ascribed to St Thomas Acquinas 1227-12
translated by G.M.Hopkins 1844-1889
The Last Supper as a communion service is Your memorial
a blessing for all people of all times,
when You the Passover Lamb are symbolically
yet actually sacrificed for us as You were on the †.
All thanks and glory ever be, this is the source of our life,
our communion, our most blessed and holy union with our Father.
Your most precious body and blood given for us
to see – praise be – our redemption and satisfaction.
Mark 14 v 22 “ ‘Take, eat, this is My body’,” You said.
The most holy Eucharist is where we meet You,
in a meal recalling the Jewish blessing,
a meal where You are addressing the needs of a fallen world.
