“September falls soft, the hay’s in the loft.” Traditional rhyme
And the year is advancing
With best reason,
Season by season
Always to give glory to God.
August passing, late summer heralding
Autumn’s earliest arrival in a landscape
Soon to be marvellously,
Ablaze with richest colour resplendently.
And the leaves are already turning,
Yearning perhaps for the later season’s tranquillity.
Time awaiting beyond the late season’s pickings
Of Your goodness, Lord, so evident in harvest festival.
So the year is moving fast forwards
That You may continue to bless us.
Summer fun over and done,
Autumn is awaiting.
Yet we still have September to remind and remember
From a song, source not known ‘Summer time and the living is easy.’
Open my eyes wider to see how You remain with us.
Late summer come autumn is glorious,
The welcome sun still warming us,
Rich pickings of fruit fully forming, delighting the senses.
Taste like colour, is the bright light of Your love,
A precious gift by which to awaken us.
Seed time and harvest and the corn has ripened around us.
‘Taste and see’, You say to me,
September sunshine richly ripening all fruits, so generous!
Life all around us, Your love as the purpose,
Gifted as we witness how the seasons change.
Lord, You move life forwards, yet remain ever with us.
I thank You for August, month of relaxation and refreshing.
Now autumn is awaiting,
September too will be full of wonderful blessings.
What providence there is in Your goodness to us.
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the (wo)man who trusts in Him!” Psalm 34 v 8
“The innocent brightness of a new born day is lovely yet.” William Wordsworth
Lord, as You move the cycle of the year forwards, we have to trust that You hold all things in
Your more than capable hands. Your providence is our protection. Thank You that You
increase our awareness of this by the beauty that surrounds us.
“This is what I have seen to be good; it is fitting to eat and drink and find enjoyment in
all the toil with which one toils under the sun in the few days of the life God gives us;
for this is our lot. Likewise all to whom God gives wealth and possession and whom He
enables to enjoy them, and to accept their lot and find enjoyment in the toil – this is the
Ecclesiastes 5 v 18, 19 gift of God.”
There is such wealth and possession in the beauty of each season advancing. As we move
through the year, let us please, never fail to glimpse Your providence in the changes that take
place naturally around us. We cannot control the times and seasons, but You do! This is what
I have seen to be good: You are ever with us, Your beauty is the witness. Autumn is awaiting.
Thank You. How very good You are to us!
